Jamie Carragher picks who’s been better this season… Cole Palmer or Phil Foden

thechelseachronicle.com 2024/6/18

Jamie Carragher has made a decision between Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Manchester City’s Phil Foden when deciding who’s had the better season.

For Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, they’ve both shone at their respective club sides this season. The former teammates will hope for success together when they join up in the England squad for the Euro 2024 tournament this summer.

It’s no great surprise that Palmer and Foden are nominated for the two main player awards this campaign, the Premier League Player of the Year and Premier League Young Player of the Year.

During this debut season as a Chelsea player, Palmer’s netted 21 goals and made 10 assists in the league so far. The left-footed attacking playmaker is simply knitting everything together for a Blues side seventh in the table.

Meanwhile, attacking genius Foden has 17 goals and eight assists in the league for a Man City side that are two victories away from a fourth consecutive division title.

Jamie Carragher picks Cole Palmer or Phil Foden

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher narrowed it down to Palmer or Foden when choosing his best player of the Premier League season.

Eventually, he opted for the Man City playmaker over his Chelsea counterpart:

Carragher told Sky Sports Premier League: “I spent all day thinking about this. There was two players I was thinking about. [Phil] Foden and Cole Palmer. The reason I never went for Cole Palmer, maybe it’s wrong to say this, but just the fact he was with Chelsea, they haven’t had a great season or played in the Champions League. I could have tossed a coin on it. I think Cole Palmer has been absolutely sensational this season.”

How much do they impact their teams?

Foden has been directly involved in 25 of Man City’s 91 league goals (27%). When you consider the amount of incredible teammates he has around him at the Etihad Stadium, that’s quite some achievement from the 23-year-old.

As for Palmer, he’s been directly involved in 31 of Chelsea’s 61 league goals (51%). It’s alarming just how much Chelsea have relied on the 22-year-old since he joined them last summer from Man City.

Good luck to England boss Gareth Southgate fitting them in the same XI because they both thrive as a central attacking playmaker or an inverted right-winger. However, you surely have to find room for Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham and Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka as well.
