First lady Jill Biden is scheduled to speak in Wilmington on Monday.

The first lady is expected to arrive at Wilmington International Airport at 11:30 a.m. and speak at a political event in Wilmington at 12:15 p.m.

Jill Biden's arrival comes as many in the Democratic party have sounded alarms over President Joe Biden and his prospects for winning a second term.

Some North Carolina Democrats raised concerns over President Biden's candidacy after a subpar showing in the first presidential debate on June 27 in Atlanta. The next day in Raleigh, Joe Biden and Jill Biden spoke at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds as some in the party and media wondered if the president should step down.

On Friday in Wisconsin, the 81-year-old president assured his supporters he wasn't dropping out of the race during a rally, promising to beat presumptive Republican challenger Donald Trump as he did in 2020.

"Let me say it as clear as I can: I'm staying in the race!" Biden said to a crowd in Madison. "I’ll beat Donald Trump."

He affirmed that sentiment with a message on X Friday that said, "Let me say this as clearly as I can: I'm the sitting President of the United States. I'm the nominee of the Democratic party. I'm staying in the race."

On Wednesday, July 3, Democratic governors from across the country discussed their concerns with Biden during a meeting. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper was there and issued a statement in support of the sitting president.

"We had a good meeting with the president talking about what's needed to win," Cooper said. "Donald Trump is an existential threat to our democracy, and everyone in the room agreed that defeating him is imperative. President Biden told us he is definitely running for reelection. He is our nominee, and we'll continue doing everything we can to deliver North Carolina for him."

No Democratic presidential candidate has carried North Carolina, often a key battleground state, since Barack Obama in 2008 with Biden on the ticket. Obama is the lone Democrat to carry the state since 1976, a span of 11 elections. Trump won North Carolina in 2016 and 2020.

In April, Trump's team called off a planned rally in Wilmington because of severe weather.

Additionally, Jill Biden will visit Tampa, Florida, and Columbus, Georgia on Monday.
