Drop the “honourable” title from members of parliament

After the disgraceful acts by MPs in handling the Finance Bill 2024 despite tons and tons of pleadings by Kenyans for them to reject the Bill in the country’s economic interests, the MPs went ahead and dared the Kenyan people “mta doo” what will you do?
With a speaker whose general behaviour and conduct borders on a kind of a devious mercenary other than an impartial arbiter in house business, the house went ahead and rushed the process in the middle of uprising.
Without mentioning the unbridled arrogance, foul attitude and hiding behind the title of “elected leaders” when it suits them, but slapping the voters in the face at the slightest beck by president is disgraceful.
If MPs were honourable as the title expects them to be, then the Tuesday events would have forced all of them to step down consciously and allow the country to go for elections.
There can’t be any further explanation to that resolve than seeing hundreds of thousands of youth, well aware that breeching parliament will get them killed but proceeded anyway.
Nothing explains dissatisfaction and regret in the leadership of Moses We-tangula and Amazon Kingi than the fact that they were cowardly spirited away in ambulances just to escape the wrath and of Kenyans.
But in a rare mockery and vomiting on Kenyans, the same house of shame passed the deployment of army to militarise the country in a record 30 minutes.
The title “Hon” has a lot of expectations from people who elect but more importantly is to remain true to the title and behave as one all the times because you carry the most important office.
The office of MP is important because it accords you firsts in public life.
It therefore calls that those who elect you and accords you the title expect their issues to reign supreme all the time except where they have given you contra instructions otherwise.
It’s the voters first, party position second and then personal issues down the line. However we have witnessed a scenario where 13th parliament has inverted the order of things by placing voters down but personal favours and party position reigning supreme.
By nature of how MPs go around soliciting votes from people, they qualify to be common beggars and begging is not a honourable job.
It’s only become honourable courtesy of the people who elect who who gives the member special status.
It’s not the president of the party because he doesn’t have such powers to elect you to parliament.
In recent times we have seen all sorts of criminals being elected to parliament and carrying their bad behaviours alongside the “honourable” title.
Today parliamentary has in its ranks people who should be in jail other than the august house.
It’s disturbing that Kenyans have witnessed in total shock MPs behaving it total disregard to the very people who elected them forcing them to raid their private homes and destroy properties to send a message.
If majority of MPs were true to self and tenets of democracy, they will realise that Kenyans have gone out of way to make the life of an MP a lot more comfortable complete with the instruments of independence of parliament from undue control by executive.
During Daniel Moi’s time MPs were being paid low allowances just to make them vulnerable for control by executive.
All government Bills were brought in on Thursday afternoon but will the Leader of majority carrying loads of money to bribe MPs in his office and pass unpopular government bills.
This is the singular issue that led the drafters of constitution to give the powers to appropriate resources to MPs who as a rule appropriates the same to State House.
This is the reason Kenyans have until Tuesday focused on parliament to listen to their concerns but the deaf parliament thought otherwise.
Besides the hefty pay packages where members draw sitting allowances, mileage allowances and CDF why would greed lead an MP to defy those who elected him/her.
Why wait until the finance Bill provokes huge unrest culminating to lose of lives and properties as if people in this country are just a means of getting to parliament and thereafter remain rugs.
While the triumphant Tuesday must be remembered every year in the calendar of liberation movement, the MPs must lose the title that gives them status over the rest of Kenyans’.
The title of honourable members alongside the resignation of their gang leader Wetang’ula.
