Who is Rebecca Joynes?

Rebecca Joynes is a former secondary school teacher from Greater Manchester who was found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with two of her teenage pupils.

The court heard that Joynes, 30, had sexual relationships with two boys, named as Boy A and Boy B.

These relationships included unprotected sex and inappropriate messaging.

The incidents occurred while the boys were still students at the school where she taught.

She lured Boy A with presents before she had sex with him twice in her apartment in Salford.

Joynes became pregnant by Boy B, who was 16 at the time, although she initially told him she couldn’t bear children.

When she was released on bail in November, I really struggled and wondered how my abuser could be walking free. I had a panic attack seeing the news, I’d never had a panic attack before.

When he found out that she was pregnant, the boy tried to end the relationship.

He said in court: “I would try and end it and would say ‘you are a f***ing weirdo, you’re a nonce basically, go find someone your own age’.”

Joynes said: “I was in love with him. I was pregnant with his child.”

Boy B told the court how he was “coerced, controlled and sexually abused” by the teacher.

The boy said: “It tore my family apart, they struggled to come to terms with the fact they brought me to school which was supposed to be a safe environment.

“My parents broke down every day and night.

“When she was released on bail in November, I really struggled and wondered how my abuser could be walking free.

“I had a panic attack seeing the news, I’d never had a panic attack before.

“I struggled to understand how she takes no responsibility.

“The term ‘victim’ has been used to describe myself and Boy A, but it’s bigger than that.

“It reaches further than us. All our families have been profoundly impacted.”

Rebecca Joynes was convicted of six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, including two while being a person in a position of trust on Thursday July 4, 2024 at Manchester Crown Court.

She has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison.

Sentencing, Judge Kate Cornell said Joynes showed “breathtaking gall” and “astonishing arrogance”.

Jane Wilson, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said: “Rebecca Joynes was in a position of trust as a high school teacher.

“She abused her position to groom and exploit two schoolboys in the worst way, with no thought for the lasting impact it would have on them.

“Every parent sends their children to school expecting them to be safeguarded and taken care of; Joynes’s actions have eroded that trust.

“I would like to thank the victims for supporting the prosecution.

“I hope they can start to move forward knowing Joynes has been held accountable for her actions.”
