Hundreds of youths gathered at Uhuru Park to pay tribute to those killed during anti-government protests over the past three weeks.

The Shujaaz Memorial concert, held on the historic Saba Saba day, marked a culmination of the ongoing protests against corrupt leadership and economic woes.

Security was beefed up in the city’s CBD and key government installations as protesters demanded justice for the 43 people killed and over 600 injured, according to the Kenya Human Rights Commission.

The protesters, mainly disenchanted youth, called for an overhaul of the parliament, an end to corruption, and reining in of excessive spending.

Kenyan entertainers and activists joined the crowd, rallying against bad leadership and exercising their democratic right to protest. The atmosphere was somber, with makeshift crosses bearing the names of the victims adorned with the Kenyan flag.

The government claims 25 people were killed and 400 injured, but rights groups dispute these figures.

The KHRC’s count puts the death toll at 43, with over 600 injured. As the country commemorates Saba Saba day, which marks a pivotal moment in Kenya’s struggle for democracy, protesters are pushing for real change in how the country is governed.

Will their demands be heard? Only time will tell.
