A historic steam train, currently making a tour of the English Riviera, pulled up in Exeter this morning (Saturday, July 6). Eager train enthusiasts caught sight of the LNER Class A4 steam train Sir Nigel Gresley which chugged alongside the platform at Exeter St David's train station while on a journey around the Devon coast.

The vibrant blue train, named for its designer Sir Nigel Gresley, holds the post-war speed record for steam trains on the railway in Britain. It is currently making it's way through Devon, carrying tourists on a visit to the region with Saphos Trains.

Video footage shows the locomotive sat at Exeter St David's at around 11.45am, before it chugs away from the platform. In typical steam-train fashion, smoke can be seen billowing charmingly from its chimney.

According to Saphos Trains, the Sir Nigel Gresley is heading from Exeter to Exmouth and the Jurassic coast, before passing Dawlish and travelling towards Paignton. The locomotive can be seen in the South West throughout July, reports its dedicated website, travelling into Plymouth on July 11, and making the same Riviera trip again on July 20.

The Sir Nigel Gresley was designed by its namesake and built in 1937 for use on the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). It ran for many years - mainly at Kings Cross in London - before it was eventually retired form service in 1966 and bought to be preserved the same year.

It was saved by the A4 Preservation Society in the 60s and continues to make journeys to this day. According to the society, it very recently underwent a 10-year overhauland runs on mainline rail tours and heritage railways across the country.
