Brits brace for a weekend washout with showers across the country as temperatures fall to 17C (and rain threatens play at Wimbledon again)

Daily Mail Online 2024/10/5

Brits are bracing for a weekend washout with showers set to hit the country and temperatures due to fall to 17C - as rain threatens to halt play at Wimbledon once again.

The Met Office is predicting heavy rainfall in central and eastern England today, with thundery showers due tomorrow, as the UK prepares for a wet weekend.

The forecaster has even issued a yellow weather warning for parts of Scotland with up to two inches (50mm) of rain expected in the North-East and parts of the Highlands.

Temperatures are also set to plummet this weekend with highs of just 19C and some areas being 7C cooler than the average at this time of year.

This will mean that the tennis at Wimbledon looks likely to be affected again while the rain is set to avoid Silverstone until later on Saturday - but showers could affect some of qualifying.

The Met Office has said the main cause of the changeable weather over the next few days is the jet stream being placed firmly to the south of Britain, as well as as the arrival of low pressure.

Following a wet Friday, where much of the rain focussed in the south, the downpours will make their way across to the centre and the east of England overnight.

In Scotland, motorists have been warned they may face difficult driving conditions in parts of Aberdeenshire, Moray and the Highlands overnight, where a yellow severe weather warning is in place following a forecast of heavy rain.

Meteorologists have warned of possible flooding and disruption to travel in an area covering Stonehaven, Aberdeen, Fraserborough, Banff, Elgin, Alness, Inverness and Aviemore until 10am on Saturday.
