Meteor Spotted Over Turkey As It Makes Mesmersing Entry Into Earth

The night sky in Turkey was lit up bright when a meteor entered the Earth's atmosphere on July 6. The fireball entered with a bright green flash of light much to the amazement of the onlookers.

Several videos of the meteor sighting are now going viral on social media.

According to The Guardian, the meteor was spotted in the city of Safranbolu but the streak of light was also visible in Kastamonu, about 100 kilometres from Safranbolu.

In a post on X, the Turkish Space Agency confirmed the meteor sighting and explained the characteristics of these cosmic objects.

Meteors are rocks from outer space that enter the Earth's atmosphere as a fireball and they are called 'meteorite' if they survive the re-entry and hit the ground. A meteor's colour during re-entry depends on its chemical composition, speed and gases in the Earth's atmosphere.

If a meteor is large enough, it can release more energy and create more intense colours.

This is the second time this year when a meteor sighting of this magnitude has occurred. Earlier in May this year, a broken piece of comet broke and entered our planet in a stunning display over Spain and Portugal.

The European Space Agency (ESA) said at the time that the meteor was not traced prior to the re-entry or the impact.
