Explained: Why Real Madrid Will Be Presented With La Liga Trophy Twice

theeagle.com.ng 2024/5/19

Following a dispute with the RFEF, Real Madrid will receive their new La Liga trophy twice in the upcoming week.

After winning La Liga in 2023–24, Real Madrid will be treated to not one, but two trophy ceremonies. With four games remaining in the Spanish top division, Los Blancos have guaranteed their place at the top and will soon be able to celebrate with their supporters. However, supporters will have to wait until Tuesday, May 14, when Alaves visit the Santiago Bernabeu, as Real Madrid will not be receiving their most recent piece of silverware against Granada in La Liga.

The RFEF had wanted the trophy presentation to go ahead at Granada but Real Madrid asked for a change as José Ramón Sandoval’s could be relegated on Saturday. Los Blancos felt a trophy presentation would therefore not be appropriate, according to Marca. The trophy will now be officially presented at Madrid’s training ground on Sunday morning, allowing the team the chance to show it off later to fans at a celebration event at Cibeles Fountain and at the City Hall in Madrid. A second presentation will then take place at the Bernabeu when Alaves visit the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid has accumulated 87 La Liga points thus far this season, which is their second-best point total in the competition’s history following their first 34 games played in a single campaign. When they scored 88 points in 2011–12 under Jose Mourinho, it was their highest scoring total ever.

Next up, Real Madrid will play Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal match, returning to European action. Prior to the rematch on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu, the score is tied at 2-2. In the final at Wembley, the winners will take either PSG or Borussia Dortmund.
