LAGOS – The Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights, (CDWR), has urged Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, to take action against the police officers responsible for the fatal shooting of a casual worker at Sumal Foods manufacturing company in Ibadan.

CDWR, in denouncing the tragic incident, recommended that the company provide compensation to the family of the deceased individual.

Mr. Bode, a worker at the company, got shot while participating in a protest staged by the employees on Monday.

CDWRD, in a statement signed by Comrade Olusesan Rufus, National Chairperson, and Comrade Chinedu Bosah, National Secretary, also recommended that the injured workers receive medical treatment paid for by the company and receive fair compensation.

The group urged the police authorities to apprehend and bring to justice the officers responsible for the workers’ deaths and injuries.

“We are calling for justice and fair compensation for the families of the deceased.

The workers who were injured should receive medical treatment paid for by the company and receive appropriate compensation.”

“We are also demanding that the police officers responsible for the workers’ deaths and mistreatment be apprehended and brought to justice.

The management of Sumal has allegedly defended the police deployment by claiming it was needed due to the protest escalating into violence. This claim is completely false!”

“In this regard, we are urging the state leaders of both the NLC and the TUC to promptly step in and work towards the release of all detained workers. Additionally, they should thoroughly investigate and resolve the issues affecting the workers at the company, such as anti-worker practices and unfair labor conditions,” the group emphasized.
