Paul Scholes claims one prime Man Utd legend was ‘unbeatable’ on his day, despite Roy Keane calling him ‘overrated’

Paul Scholes and Roy Keane could not see eye to eye on one Manchester United legend’s quality, despite agreeing he was one of the best players they played alongside.

The two Manchester United legends had an incredible playing career at Old Trafford and forged a formidable midfield partnership during their time together at the club.

Roy Keane excelled as a box-to-box midfielder and was revered for his no-nonsense approach on the field, with the former United star excelling as club captain.

Paul Scholes was a linchpin midfield figure for legendary former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders of all time.

A prominent member of the ‘Class of ’92,’ Scholes spent his entire playing career under Ferguson and hoovered up the major silverware under the Scotsman.

Keane has spoken highly of the 49-year-old former England and United midfielder, including the impact that Scholes had during his time at Old Trafford.

Scholes rates ‘unbeatable’ Man Utd legend

Speaking in United Review, Paul Scholes was asked to name his ‘ultimate’ Manchester United XI and he picked a star-studded roster of players.

Scholes’ picks included fellow United legend Keane, who was one of two central midfielders in the ultimate XI alongside the legendary Bryan Robson.

Speaking on Keane, Scholes said: “A fantastic leader, and someone you’d love to have alongside you in midfield.”

Scholes also spoke highly of United legend Peter Schmeichel and included the Dane in his team, adding that he was the “best” ‘keeper he ever played with in his career.

“Peter was unbeatable on his day – definitely the best ‘keeper I’ve ever played with,” he said in 2009, as per Manchester United’s official website.

Keane disagrees with Scholes over Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel is considered one of the best ‘keepers of all time and had a prolific impact at Old Trafford, including being a key member of the treble-winning team.

However, the 60-year-old United legend didn’t see eye to eye with Keane and his former teammate has spoken openly about their infighting at the Red Devils.

Keane, much like Scholes, previously admitted that Schmeichel was the best shot-stopper he played alongside in his legendary career.

But the 52-year-old Irishman didn’t see Schmeichel in the same “unbeatable” way as Scholes, with Keane insisting that the United legend was “overrated.”

Speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap in 2021, Keane said: “I suppose I would have to say Peter, but I still think he was overrated.

“Peter Schmeichel, yeah.”

When quizzed by Gary Neville over why Schmeichel was “overrated,” Keane simply replied: “I just don’t think he was as good as everyone made out. But he was very good.”
