Tesco Clubcard shoppers are unknowingly missing out on an extra £144 compared to their counterparts at Aldi and Lidl, according to a recent study by Which?.
Clubcard Shoppers Spending Less
The study revealed that Tesco shoppers with a Clubcard are spending an average of £130.90 on their shopping basket, which is higher than the average spending at Aldi (£118) and Lidl (£121). This means that Tesco Clubcard holders are losing out on savings of £9 and £12 respectively to Aldi and Lidl shoppers.
Cheapest Supermarkets Revealed
In the June supermarket study by Which?, Aldi was crowned the cheapest supermarket with an average shopping list cost of £118.41, closely followed by Lidl at £121.31. Tesco, with its Clubcard discounts taken into account, ranked as the third cheapest option. On the other end of the spectrum, Waitrose emerged as the most expensive supermarket at £151.01.
Importance of Loyalty Prices
Which? Retail Editor Ele Clark emphasized the importance of including loyalty prices in their analysis, stating that it is crucial for all shoppers, especially the vulnerable, to benefit from a transparent pricing strategy. The study highlighted that Aldi and Lidl continue to offer lower prices compared to traditional supermarkets, even with loyalty discounts factored in.
Shopping Without Loyalty Cards
For those shopping with a Clubcard, Tesco proved to be the cheapest option with a larger shopping list costing £439.58. However, shopping at Tesco without a Clubcard led to higher prices than at Ocado. Similarly, shopping at Sainsbury's without a Nectar card proved to be costlier than shopping at Tesco with a Clubcard.
Conclusion
With the rise of membership-only pricing structures, it is essential for consumers to be aware of the true cost of their shopping. Tesco Clubcard holders may be missing out on significant savings compared to Aldi and Lidl shoppers, showcasing the importance of understanding loyalty prices and making informed shopping decisions.
