Although growing tomatoes are the perfect choice for beginners, they do need regular care and maintenance in order to flourish properly.

The experts at Phostrogen said: “Once your seeds have germinated and are approximately three inches tall, seedlings can be transferred to a sunny position outside either in containers or the ground.

“Choose a sunny, sheltered spot, east or south-facing are usually best for maximum afternoon sunshine. You can also get young plants from all garden centres if you’d like a head start.

“When you’re ready to transfer seedlings or young plants, gently plant the stems into the soil, giving each plant plenty of space.

“If your tomato variety requires a stake, tie plants onto canes with a figure of eight knots to avoid chafing, and don’t forget to mulch.”

When placed outside, choose a position in full sun to enable them to have at least eight hours of sunlight each day.

One crucial job which should be done regularly is pinching the side shoots out to ensure the plants grow upwards instead of sideways.>>>CONTINUE FULL READING HERE

This enables the plant to put all of its energy into growing nice and tall with lots of fruit.

If the side shoots are not removed, they may form a mass of long, leggy stems and may not provide trusses of fruit.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends checking for side shoots every time you water tomato plants.

The experts said following all of these tips will help to provide gardeners with “bigger” and juicer” tomatoes.

As well as providing tomatoes with lots of sun, they are also hungry plants and require lots of nutrients.

Make sure to feed them with a tomato fertiliser as this is high in potash and ideal for their needs.>>>CONTINUE FULL READING HERE
