3 quakes rock Leyte provinces

MANILA, Philippines —  Three earthquakes of different magnitudes rocked the island of Leyte yesterday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said the quakes – with magnitudes 4.9, 4.4 and 4.6 – occurred at 1:22 p.m., 1:28 p.m. and 1:53 p.m., respectively.

The epicenter of the magnitude 4.9 temblor was located 42 kilometers north of Abuyog, Leyte.

Instrumental Intensity 3 was recorded in Hinundayan and Hinunangan in Southern Leyte, and in Dulag and Abuyog in Leyte.

Instrumental Intensity 2 was recorded in Alangalang, Leyte.

The epicenter of the second quake was located 43 kilometers north of Abuyog.

It was felt at Intensity 2 in Tacloban and Palo in Leyte.

Instrumental Intensity 2 was recorded in Dulag and Abuyog, Hinundayan, and Catbalogan in Samar.

The epicenter of the third quake was located 41 kilometers north of Abuyog.

Phivolcs said the quakes were aftershocks of a magnitude 5.8 temblor that jolted Leyte in May this year.

Meanwhile, another magnitude 5 quake rocked Eastern Samar at 1:53 p.m. yesterday.

The epicenter of the quake was located 31 kilometers south of Balangiga town.

The quake was not expected to cause damage to property, but it may generate aftershocks, Phivolcs said.
