Ex-Nigeria international rejects reports linking him to Super Eagles job

Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has dismissed reports linking him to the vacant Super Eagles head coach position.

As the search for a new coach gains momentum, Adepoju, 53, has been rumored to be among the candidates vying for the role left vacant by Finidi George.

Other rumored candidates include former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia and foreign managers Marc Brys, Antonio Conceicao, Didier Six, and Herve Renard, although the NFF has denied some of these reports.

In an exclusive interview with OwoSports, Adepoju, who earned 48 caps for Nigeria, emphatically denied expressing interest in the position.

"It's not true. I never applied, and I never told anybody I was interested," the former Real Sociedad midfielder stated.

The Super Eagles coaching role became vacant after Finidi George resigned after just two matches in charge.

The former Enyimba gaffer reportedly left due to the NFF's decision to hire a foreign technical adviser after the team's poor showing in World Cup qualifier matches against South Africa and Benin Republic.

Nigeria's 1-1 draw in Uyo and 2-1 loss to Benin Republic in Abidjan have put their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification chances in jeopardy.
