Marvel Comics is recreating X-Men: Days of Future Past, only this time a far more powerful mutant is guiding Wolverine through time.
Life of Wolverine #1 opens with Jean Grey and Charles Xavier standing on either side of the titular mutant hero, who is waiting on a stone slab for whatever comes next. As Jean explains, she is prepared to send Wolverine hurtling through time, yet in order to do so while keeping his mind safe, she must fully uncover every aspect of who he is. To that end, Logan opens up in a way he never has before, finally giving someone a glimpse at the entirety of his life rather than mere shreds or pieces of its vast tapestry.

Since his first full appearance in 1974's Incredible Hulk #181 by Len Wein and Herb Trimpe, Wolverine has been one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel Universe. For decades, he was also one of the publisher's more mysterious characters, as the details of his sprawling past were largely unknown, even to himself. It wasn't until 2001's Wolverine: The Origin by Paul Jenkins, Bill Jemas, Joe Quesada, and Andy Kubert that fans were given a concrete idea of where Logan came from.
The concept of a character's consciousness being sent back in time as seen in Life of Wolverine was also the crux of the infamous and iconic "Days of Future Past" storyline by Chris Claremont and John Byrne. The story, which ran through the pages of 1981's Uncanny X-Men #141 and #142, saw Kitty Pryde sent back in time to prevent the rise of an apocalyptic future where mutants are lorded over and killed by the towering robots known as Sentinels.

Marvel Comics' latest Werewolf by Night has just joined the fight against Blade's seemingly infinite vampire legion in Blood Hunt.
This storyline was retold in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past, in which Elliot Page's Kitty Pryde was the one to send the consciousness of Wolverine, portrayed by Hugh Jackman, back in time. The film opened to largely positive reviews and has maintained its status as a fan-favorite in the years since. X-Men: Days of Future Past has also been regarded as something of a course correction for Fox's X-Men feature film franchise, as it rewrote several major character deaths that took place in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand.

Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180, where he battled the Jade Giant to a standstill, before joining Marvel's X-Men in 1975. Since then, the short-tempered berserker with unbreakable claws has proven himself as one of Marvel's most popular characters. The mutant hero was also the backbone of the X-Men film franchise, which ran from 2000 to 2020, and critics consider his solo film, Logan, one of the best superhero movies ever made.
Known as an unstoppable tank who can cut through anything, Wolverine isn't technically one of Marvel's most powerful heroes but he's one of the deadliest characters on their roster. Even villains like Magneto and the Juggernaut have learned to be wary of Wolverine's claws.
