VIOLENT protests by Sumal Foods casual workers, Oluyole Industrial Estate, Ibadan left one person dead while 12 workers were arrested while agitating for salary increments as part of their palliatives.

Trouble began when some casual workers of the company staged a protest over the non-increment of their salaries, the company’s refusal to provide them with palliatives, and the failure to increase wages.

The casual staff claimed that the Federal Government had last year, directed the organised private sector to give their workers palliatives, however, the company failed to heed the directive, leading to protests from the workers who took to the streets around the work area.

The Management of the company was said to have invited security agents to stop the protest, however, the angry workers resisted them and this led to a confrontation in which one life was lost.

The incident has been confirmed by the Oyo State Police Command.

A statement by the command’s Spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, noted that the disturbing violent protests rocked one of the factories belonging to Sumal Foods, Oluyole extension Ibadan around 4: 00 PM.

He explained that the protest was premised on widespread false information authored and peddled by some of the workers, concerning the disbursement of palliative to all privately owned companies and firms in the country.

“Their grouse however was that they were being denied the welfare package”.

The release further stated that the protest was hijacked by criminal elements who forced their way into the factory, destroying vehicles and property worth millions of naira.

The Police, however, noted that normalcy has since returned to the affected area after the deployment of the command’s operational and tactical assets to prevent any possible future reoccurrence.

The Command further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police has ordered that the entire case, be taken up by the Homicide Department of the Criminal Investigation Department with the Deputy Commissioner of Police directly in charge of investigations.
