In a recent development, the Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust (KCHFT) has taken swift action to address fire safety concerns at Sevenoaks Hospital. Patients Relocated to Ensure Safety Some inpatients from the rehabilitation ward at Sevenoaks Hospital have been temporarily relocated to Tonbridge Cottage Hospital following an evacuation drill that revealed concerning delays. Chief executive Mairead McCormick emphasized the importance of swiftly and safely evacuating frail and elderly patients, indicating that the current evacuation procedures were not meeting necessary standards. Fire Safety Audit Triggers Emergency Response The decision to move patients came after a fire safety audit conducted by Kent Fire and Rescue Service identified issues with fire compartmentation at the hospital. While services at the hospital are still operational, the trust acknowledges the need for urgent action to address the safety concerns. Ms. McCormick assured that the relocation is a temporary measure as the trust continues to investigate the underlying issues. Future Plans for Hospital Upgrades Addressing the challenges posed by an aging infrastructure, the trust is looking into substantial investments required to upgrade the facility to the required safety standards. Moreover, the trust is expanding its capacity by opening 15 beds at West View Integrated Care Centre in Tenterden to support the healthcare system in Kent and Medway. Collaborative Efforts for Patient Well-being The trust, in conjunction with health and care partners, is dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition for patients, their families, and caregivers during this relocation process. Ms. McCormick reiterated the commitment to working closely with all stakeholders to minimize disruptions and prioritize patient safety. With these proactive measures in place, the trust aims to uphold the highest standards of care and safety for the community. This decisive action underscores the trust's unwavering dedication to patient well-being and safety amidst evolving healthcare challenges.
