Guardian Nigeria 2024/10/5

As part of efforts aimed at checking the spread of fibroid among women in Nigeria, the Support Association for Fibroids Awareness (SAFA) held a seminar to educate participants on the treatment and management of fibroid.

At the free awareness seminar, which is held quarterly, a medical doctor, Tope Olowogbayi, provided insights about fibroid, saying that it is important for women to seek appropriate information to help them manage and treat fibroid.

He also said that there is nothing like spiritual fibroid as some of often speculates, maintaining that with right information, medical guidance and community support, a fibroid patient can navigate the challenges of the ailment and live a healthy life.

Olowogbayi stated that about 70 to 80 percent of women will likely develop fibroid in their life time with uterine fibroid common among women.

He added that 30 per cent of patients with fibroid would see symptoms but many may not, listing abnormal swelling, heavy menstrual bleeding, urinary frequency, pelvic pain and constipation as the usual symptoms.

According to him, one of the ways to treat fibroid is through High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) which is a process of using ultrasound waves on the cancerous tissues responsible for the fibroid.

On her part, the Manager, SAFA, Wemimo Adewuni, said that her association is willing to collaborate with religious organisations and groups to organise awareness seminars for women about fibroid.

She added that the group is out to raise awareness about fibroid including dispelling wrong information about fibroid.
