Nigerians Accuse NIPOST Workers Of Constantly Stealing Parcels Sent In From US, UK, Others

Sahara Reporters 2 days ago

The aggrieved victims said that items like iPhone 15, Gold Jewelries, amongst other expensive items sent from the US and the UK to Abuja, Lagos and Ibadan offices of the NIPOST had been deliberately stolen by the officials of the Service who always denied receipt of the items, even when the items like phones were tracked to the NIPOST office.

Nigerians have taken to X platform (formerly Twitter) to lament and accuse staff members of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) of constantly stealing expensive items sent to them from the United States, the United Kingdom and other foreign countries.

An X user, @Maleekoyibo, narrated how an iPhone was sent to his brother from the US and it has been months since the item was sent through NIPOST but the recipient has not received the item.

According to @Maleekoyibo, the tracking ID of the phone has shown that the item has been delivered to NIPOST Area 3 office in Abuja but NIPOST staff at the office claimed that the item has not arrived.

@Maleekoyibo said, “An iphone 15 was sent to my brother from the USA, it's been months now and he’s yet to get his phone.

“The tracking ID shows that the device has been delivered to @NIPOSTNG Area 3, Abuja Nigeria. But your staff claims the device has not arrived.

“Same thing happened when a gold jewelry was sent to us from the USA. Your staff at Area 1 Abuja, concealed it and denied receipt.

“How long will the stealing at Nipost continue? How much longer do we have to deal with missing items in NIPOST?

“Dear @bosuntijani, the current situation at Nipost is very appalling, kindly intervene sir. The thieves at Nipost need to be punished.”

In another post, @Maleekoyibo said, “If your mother works at NIPOST Area 1, just know she’s a thief.

“A client sent back a gold jewelry from the US, using NIPOST. It arrived in Abuja and no one called. After about 2 weeks, we went to NIPOST Area 1, this woman denied receiving our package and asked us to go to NIPOST Area 10. Area 10 couldn’t find it and they sent us back to the woman.

“After many back and forth, a director from the headquarters had to give us a note to hand to the woman. Immediately she read the note, she opened her drawer and gave us the package, it was in her drawer all these while. Thieves, most staff at NIPOST are thieves.”

Another X user, @dangbanamanager in a post attached with photos complained how a wrist watch was sent from the US to Nigeria via USPS and the item arrived in Lagos but a NIPOST official allegedly swapped the original wrist watch sent from the US with another bought from Lagos.

@dangbanamanager said, “A watch was sent from the USA to Nigeria via USPS and arrived in Lagos, but someone in Nipost swapped it with a Lagos Island watch. I'm so tired of this.”

Also, @bestjemever said, “This is so crazy. I was really at the post office today (June 10) and they said they couldn’t find my package.

“The worst part is, it’s supposed to have been there since May 7th. This is so bad. I’m always praying I never get my packages from NIPOST.”

Another X user, @SN_Geo also narrated how in “2015, returning to Nigeria, I invested in a bunch of refurbished mobile tablets. Sent them ahead of my travel and NIPOST swallowed all the goods. I begged and begged, I couldn't recover one tablet.

“I went to the office numerous times until one lady took pity on me, pulled me aside and advised me to give it up. Apparently the tablets were all shared among the top staff there.

“At this point I'd spent so much bribing staff to "help me check". That wrecked me. My landing plan was shattered and I had nothing to fall back on, but God is good.

“I put all my savings in that business and court was the last thing on my mind.”

Also, @abbatee_dollar said, “I ordered a wrist watch from Ali Express to be delivered to me in Nigeria via the Post office. The package arrived in Nigeria and its destination according to the tracker. But the post office keeps telling me the package is yet to arrive. That was how they made me forfeit it because I’m tired.”

@BaqeerG said, “I ordered something on eBay. The seller and I tracked the package to the Post Office in Garki Area 1. I've been checking there weekly for nearly a month or two, but the package has disappeared to date, that's from October 2023.”

Also, @fourguyses said, “My mail with tracking number LN222559239US which departed JKF (USA) via USPS on 15th January 2015 mysteriously disappeared after it was handed to NIPOST for final delivery.

“You bet it contained some interesting items (iPhone, and Zen laptop for a different shipment).”

@ghibee_NG lamented, “A package was delivered to NIPOST Ibadan, it arrived and I didn't get a call or anything for 3 weeks. After another few weeks of back and forth, I got the package but they legit opened the package and took a pack of candy and chocolate and shared  amongst themselves.”

SaharaReporters’ several efforts to get the reaction and comment of the NIPOST management on the issues failed. None of the two contact phone numbers provided on its website connected when they were called.

An email was sent to two email addresses provided on the website but till the time of filing this report, NIPOST has not responded to the email.

SaharaReporters noticed that NIPOST only responded to @Maleekoyibo’s complaint on June 11, when it said, “Dear @Maleekoyibo, thank you for reaching out to us and sharing your experience.

“We are deeply sorry to hear about the difficulties you encountered with NIPOST. This is certainly not the standard of service we strive to provide, and your frustration is deeply regrettable…”
