Cross River State faces a meat crisis as high beef and goat prices lead to alleged sales of snake, donkey, and horse meat. Residents blame checkpoints and middlemen for price hikes.

Rising meat prices in Cross River State, Nigeria, have reportedly led to unconventional alternatives flooding local markets. During a recent radio phone-in program on FAD FM, callers alleged that snake, donkey, and horse meats are being sold to unsuspecting buyers in Calabar and other towns due to the scarcity and high costs of beef and goat meat.

Residents expressed concern over the situation, noting that such meats are not traditionally consumed in the region. The high prices have forced many to reduce their meat consumption or seek cheaper alternatives.

Callers blamed middlemen, union leaders, and excessive checkpoints for the price hikes. One resident claimed that cow dealers from northern Nigeria spend up to N500,000 on bribes and charges at checkpoints before reaching local markets. The combination of fuel costs, extortion, and taxes has reportedly caused beef prices to skyrocket in recent years.

Some citizens called for government intervention to reduce illegal checkpoints and ease the burden on traders and consumers alike. They also lamented the rising prices of goat meat, further limiting their protein options.

The report has sparked varied reactions among Nigerians. Many expressed alarm at the situation, with one citizen stating, "Our government needs to step in and regulate these markets." Others found humor in the circumstances, joking about trying "snake pepper soup" if it's more affordable. Some skeptics questioned the veracity of the claims, arguing that it's unlikely people wouldn't notice the difference between various types of meat. The economic implications weren't lost on commentators, with one noting, "We're becoming vegetarians by force. The economy is hitting hard."

This situation highlights the broader economic challenges facing Nigeria, with citizens grappling with rising living costs and seeking creative – sometimes controversial – solutions to meet their needs. It also underscores the complex supply chain issues affecting food security and the urgent need for sustainable solutions in the country's meat industry.
