President William Ruto has directed a review of the contentious Gazette Notice issued on August 9, 2023, by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

The notice had outlined enhanced remuneration and benefits for state officers in the Executive, the Senate, and the National Assembly.

The public outcry emerged amid growing economic challenges and fiscal constraints facing the country.

Citizens expressed their frustration on various platforms, highlighting the disparity between the proposed salary increments for state officers and the financial struggles experienced by ordinary Kenyans.

In response to the mounting criticism, Statehouse spokesperson Mohammed issued a statement today, providing an update on President Ruto’s stance.

Mohammed revealed that the President had instructed the National Treasury to thoroughly review the SRC’s Gazette Notice in light of the recent withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024 and the anticipated fiscal challenges for the current financial year.

“President Ruto has emphasized that this is a time, more than ever before, for the Executive and all arms of government to live within their means,” Mohammed stated.

“The President is committed to ensuring that the government operates in a manner that is fiscally responsible and aligned with the economic realities faced by the nation.”

The directive from President Ruto underscores the need for prudent financial management and a balanced approach to public expenditure.

The review of the salary increments aims to address the concerns raised by the public and ensure that any adjustments are justified and sustainable within the current economic context.

As the National Treasury embarks on the review process, there is anticipation that the outcome will reflect a more equitable approach to remuneration, taking into account the broader fiscal constraints and the need for shared sacrifice across all levels of government.

The President’s decisive action highlights his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible governance.

The public will be closely monitoring the review process, hopeful for a resolution that aligns with the principles of fairness and fiscal prudence.
