Chennai News Today: As the southwest monsoon continues to strengthen its grip over the region, Chennai and its surrounding areas are set to experience a spell of intense weather conditions in the coming days. According to the latest weather bulletin, the city may witness light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next 48 hours, ending on Saturday afternoon.

Weather blogger K Srikanth has observed a clear trend in recent years of Chennai receiving more rainfall during the months of June and July, which he believes could potentially exacerbate flooding and waterlogging issues during the northeast monsoon season.

"Overall, the southwest monsoon has continued to see a steady increase in seasonal rainfall. Possibly, this could also enhance flooding/waterlogging issues for Chennai during the northeast monsoons. Higher soil moisture due to heavy rain during the southwest monsoons leads to a lower flooding threshold during the northeast monsoons," Srikanth stated.

Chennai Power Cut

To facilitate maintenance work, the local authorities have announced a temporary power supply suspension in several areas of Chennai on Friday from 9 am to 2 pm.
