Games like Tarisland to scratch that MMO itch

Have you hit level 40, have 90-100 average item level, and are done with the Tarisland endgame for a moment? Yet, you still want that Tarisland-like feel, either on your PC or some form of mobile device. In that case, there are plenty of fantasy MMORPG games you can get your hands on. We’ve conjured up seven alternatives to try for either a MMO feel, gameplay, or other Tarisland features.

Let us get the elephant in the room out of the way. Tarisland was announced with very WoW-like aesthetics and trailers within weeks of WoW going offline in China. Tencent was very tactical about appealing to the WoW crowd with a new MMO. The gameplay in Tarisland from class design, builder-spender rotations, boss mechanics, game modes, content type and more all feel very WoW from Legion expansion onwards.

If you’ve not given WoW a try, there’s plenty of expansion, dungeons, battlegrounds, arenas and solo content to play. Even a lot of Tarisland classes are based on WoW’s classes and specs. Beast Tamer and Beast Master Hunter anyone? If you’re a returning player, there’s also lots of new content to try from recent expansions. WoW’s 11th expansion is right around the corner too, The War Within (at the time of writing). There’s plenty to look into for WoW.

Would you recommend this game?

Tower of Fantasy is a mobile Gacha MMO, with some familiarity with Tarisland. You pick a server, and you will see the same names and faces knocking around. In addition, you can team to battle world bosses like Tarisland. You can also join content with other players in its dungeon group content also featuring tanks, healers, and DPS. More so, Tarisland and Tower of Fatnasy’s main stories are structured similarly. The open-world exploration events also have similar vibes, as do the amusement park features too! If you want more MMO-type gameplay, with some Gacha-style mechanics, then Tower of Fantasy is a suggestion.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

  • Release Date: May 12, 2023
  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch
  • Genre(s): Action, Action Adventure, Adventure

Would you recommend this game?

While Zelda is not a mobile MMO or a PC game, it did define how many open-world action games play. Tarisland is no different, as all the jumping puzzles and collectables stem from Zelda’s innovation in that field. If you’ve not played Tears of the Kingdom on Switch, and love exploring and finding things, then Zelda’s more recent games are worth picking up.

Genshin Impact

  • Release Date: September 28, 2020
  • Platform(s): Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5
  • Genre(s): Action, Adventure, Massively Multiplayer Online, RPG

Would you recommend this game?

If you’re not all that into the end game of Tarisland, but like its MMO social features, storyline content and gameplay, you may consider Gneshin Impact as an option. While the game is largely a gacha action game, there’s similar open-world and solo content to enjoy similar to Tarisland. The game gets many updates to this day, with new content pulls, and stories constantly coming out. So, it’s a safe game to try as a free-to-play PC console or mobile gamer. There’s fishing, story content and exploration all a big game theme like how Tarisland’s early game and side content behave.

Lost Ark

  • Release Date: February 11, 2022
  • Platform(s): PC
  • Genre(s): Massively Multiplayer, RPG

Would you recommend this game?

Lost Ark is a Korean MMO action RPG which looks quite a lot of how Tarisland’s UI looks. In Lost Ark’s end game, you’ll find plenty of instanced content for raiders and solo players alike to partake in. You can click on menus, fight very specific bosses, each with their own tactics, gear requirements and loot available to them. It’s very similar to how the raid wing menu looks in Tarisland. In addition, Lost Ark also has very strong horizontal progression for your character. Tarisland’s horizontal progression works with the Inscribed Stone passively making you stronger. In Lost Ark, you can collect cards to make decks for powerful buffs or get Mokoko seed collectables. So, if you love vertical content and fighting bosses, Lost Ark offers similar content. On one final note, even the profession and job content is energy-gated, just like in Tarisland.

Also, for mobile gamers reading this, Lost Ark Mobile is in development, and we might expect more on that later in 2024. So, if you want another mobile MMO with a different style of combat, then Lost Ark is on your radar.

Guild Wars 2

  • Release Date: August 28, 2012
    • – 28 August 2012 (PC)
  • Platform(s): macOS, PC
  • Genre(s): Adventure, Fantasy, Massively Multiplayer, Massively Multiplayer Online, RPG

Would you recommend this game?

Guild Wars 2 is another MMO, and while it is not a Mobile MMO, it does have lots of horizontal progression like Tarisland. The vast majority of Guild Wars 2 content has lots of jumping puzzles, explorable areas, coop challenges, instanced party combat and more. You’ll see the connections with Tarisland’s progression and daily habits in GW2 too.

The other thing that makes Guild Wars 2 like Tarisland is its PvP combat. PvP in Guild Wars 2 scales so there’s some level of equality and more skill checks involved. Furthermore, the map design for battlegrounds in GW2’s PvP varies greatly from mode, level design, and fun little interaction like we see with Tarisland. So, if you like Tarisland PvP, and want to play PvP at any time of the day, Guild Wars 2 might be a game for you to learn for PvP alone.

Albion Online

  • Release Date: 17th July 2017
  • Platform(s): macOS, PC
  • Genre(s): Massively Multiplayer Online

Sources coming soon

Would you recommend this game?

Albion Online is a Western MMO available on PC and Mobile. While Tarisland is largely a PvE guild game, Albion is a PvP guild-focused MMO. The class design and builds for Albion are rather simple, with builds and gear-related complexity where players find their strengths, similar to Tarisland. Yet, the buttons you press are rather simple, just like Tarisland. All classes are pick-up and play for easy onboarding, which is something Tarisland does well.

The challenge for Albion is that most zones have some level of risk and reward for grinding resources. Opposing players and guilds can fight you in the majority of end-game areas as they fight for territory and resource control for crafting. It might not appeal to the average Tarisland gamer. But if you want a thriving and healthy mobile MMO community, then Albion offers what very few games can maintain. A healthy community.
