The Boys & Girls Clubs of Los Angeles Harbor — one of LA County’s largest youth-serving organizations — will soon have a new leader at its helm.

Peter Settelmayer, who has more than 15 years of experience in education, will take over as the organization’s CEO on Aug. 1, according to a recent news release.

He’ll succeed Mike Lansing, who headed up the organization for the past 30 years. Lansing is set to retire in December, staying on after Settelmayer comes on board to serve as a consultant to help with the transition release said.

“It has been a privilege to serve this organization for 30 years,” Lansing said. “I look forward to welcoming (Settelmayer) into this community — we will work together to ensure a seamless transition and continued success for the  organization.”

Settelmayer, meanwhile, is currently the CEO of Downtown College Prep, a San Jose charter school with about 1,700 students.

“As the current CEO at Downtown College Prep,” the news release said, “he leads a team of dedicated educators and staffers committed to providing high-quality, personalized and  college-preparatory education to low-income and underserved students.”

Settelmayer also previously served as executive director of City Year Americorps San Jose, is currently on the board of directors for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley’s Board of Directors, and is the board chair for the Charter School of Morgan Hill, the June 28 news release said.

“Pete Settelmayer’s dedication to empowering youth and his strategic vision for community development align perfectly with our goals,” Melissa Alvarado, co-chair of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Los Angeles Harbor’s search committee, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to welcome him as our new CEO and look forward to working closely with him to advance our mission.”

The nonprofit provides various athletics, academic and afterschool programs for underserved kids in the Harbor Area. It serves more than 2,600 youth every day, according to the organization’s website.

“The board of directors is confident that under Settelmayer’s leadership,” board chair Sergio Carrillo said, “the Boys & Girls Clubs of Los Angeles Harbor will continue to be a beacon of hope and opportunity for young people throughout the region.”
