Heavyweight boxer Ardi Ndembo has died three weeks after a knockout defeat left him in a coma.

Ndembo, 27, was left unconscious for several minutes after a brutal knockout by Nestor Santana when they clashed in Team Combat League in Florida. He was quickly transferred to a local hospital, where he was placed in an induced coma.

However, three weeks after the bout, Ndembo has passed away. A statement from the promotion read: "We at Viva Promotions mourn the loss of Ardi Ndembo, a talented Congolese boxer who tragically passed away after a knockout in a Team Combat League match on April 5.

"He remained in an induced coma until his untimely death. RIP Ardi Ndembo!"

Tributes have also poured in on social media, with one fan sharing: "May he rest in peace. Ardi Ndembo has passed away in Miami. Our condolences go to his family." While a second said: "RIP Ardi Ndembo, condolences to family and friends."

A fundraiser has been set up to help Ardi Ndembo's family

"Saddened to hear Ardi Ndembo passed away from injuries sustained in his last bout. RIP Warrior," a third. And another added: "Condolences to the family and friends of this young man, Ardi Ndembo. He was a gladiator."

A fundraiser has since been started for Ndembo's family that currently sits at over $11,000 (£8,700). The fundraiser adds: "Team Combat League will match total third-party donations up to a maximum of $25,000 to assist the Ndembo children.

"Originally from Brazzaville, Congo, Ardi Ndembo is a 27-year-old father of two. Please take a moment to send your strength, prayers and financial support to the Ndembo children at this challenging time.

"We kindly ask all to respect the family's request for privacy at this time. Thank you for your consideration."
