Kaduna Electric declares zero-tolerance for energy theft

Blueprint 2 days ago

The Chief Commercial Officer of Kaduna Electric, Ahmed Sanusi, has expressed strong reservation against all forms of energy theft, as he declared that the company would leave no stone unturned in getting offenders arrested and prosecuted.

He also decried the unauthorised transfer of energy meters by some customers, describing the practice as “illegal and against the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) regulation.

Ahmed Sanusi made the assertion Tuesday in Kaduna when he led a team comprising management staff and security operatives on routine inspection and monitoring of pre-paid customers in Barnawa, Kaduna.

He said energy theft has become so rampant in the company’s franchise and is posing a major threat to efforts at providing stable power supply and recovering payments for it.

He condemned the growing practice of energy theft, meter bypass and unauthorized movement of meters from locations where the meters were originally registered to a different location, warning that the company shall bring the full weight of the law on perpetrators.

According to him, the company has a responsibility to deliver electricity to its customers safely and shall not condone any illegal practice that put innocent people’s lives at unnecessary risk or constitutes a drain on the company’s revenue.

“Our mandate is to provide electricity services to our customers in a safe manner and in conformity with standard practices; we shall be decisive in dealing with any form of illegality by some selfish individuals in our franchise. There are guidelines, regulations and standard practices to metering and general usage of electricity and any customer found wanting in this regard shall be subjected to the relevant penalty, he said.

While at Parozza Guest Inn in Narayi, the CCO expressed displeasure at what he described as “unauthorized transfer and bypass of the energy meter as well as the illegal reconnection carried out at the facility even after disconnection of the Guest Inn last week.”
