A motorist in Devon who was caught driving without a licence was arrested after also providing a positive a roadside drugs test. The driver was stopped by police in Torquay and for the second time was found to not have his licence.

In a post shared on the official Devon and Cornwall Police - No Excuse Facebook page, officers said the driver then tested positive for cannabis and was subsequently arrested. His vehicle was also seized by police.

The full post read: "Second time for this gent! I think the conversation went, “Hello …., got your licence back yet?” Clearly was a no, as before tested positive for cannabis. Arrested and car seized again. Some will never learn!"

According to the government website, anyone convicted of drug driving will receive a minimum one-year driving ban, an unlimited fine, up to six months in prison and a criminal record. The maximum penalty for causing death by careless driving under the influence of drugs is life imprisonment.

Devon and Cornwall Police says there are five main causes of serious injuries and deaths on the region’s roads – known as the ‘fatal five’. This include:

  • Inappropriate or excessive speed
  • Not wearing a seat belt
  • Driver distractions including using mobile devices such as phones, 'sat navs' and tablets
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Careless and inconsiderate driving

The force has said that 98 per cent of collisions were caused by human error, with only two percent caused by unavoidable issues, such as mechanical failure.
