A Georgia grandmother called 911 last week, hoping to have Carroll County deputies talk with her 10-year-old grandson about riding his bike on a busy highway, but the story ends with the arrest of the child’s parents.

When the deputy arrived on the scene, he found three minor children home alone and the grandmother next door, who said she was “tired of taking care of all these kids,” WAGA reported. The grandmother, Machelle Turner, told the deputy that the children’s parents, Steve and Jessica Bailey, refused to do their part.

The deputy called in the Georgia Department of Family and Children’s Services, and while they were waiting, Jessica Bailey pulled up in a white SUV and began yelling at the children, asking if they wanted “to go back to foster care.”

The deputy asked permission to enter the home and was given the OK. Inside, he noticed an overwhelming smell of animal urine and feces and saw a refrigerator and freezer, both with locks on them. There was no food other than sauces in the cabinets, and he said it was so hot it felt like “being inside a vehicle on a hot summer day with no air flow.”

But inside a locked bedroom, which Jessica Bailey, 40, shared with her husband Steve Bailey, 61, the deputy found a window air-conditioning unit set to 54 degrees and a fully stocked mini-fridge.

According to WSB, Jessica Bailey said her husband locked away food because the children went through it too quickly.

The deputy noted also that as he was talking with her, she began cleaning the house, throwing away trash and moldy food.

The deputy said another bedroom was locked as well, and it belonged to another daughter Jessica Bailey said was away “in boot camp,” Law&Crime reported.

The grandmother told deputies the children often slept on the floor in the kitchen because it was cooler there.

The Baileys were arrested on first degree cruelty to children and have since bonded out of jail. It’s not clear when they are due back in court or what happened with the children.
