Thor: God of Thunder

Summary

  • During a battle between two cosmic entities, Thor is split into multiple beings with various aspects of himself.
  • There have been multiple versions of Thor found in various religions and mythologies throughout history.
  • Thor's versatility proves his strength as an Avenger.

The destruction of all reality is certainly an Avengers-level threat - unless you have more than one Thor. On a journey out into space, the God of Thunder finds himself in the middle of a battle between two cosmic entities. Those these two entities have been battling since before creation, what they didn’t have up until now was Thor.

In 2012's The Mighty Thor: Annual #1 by J.M. DeMatteis and Richard Elson, an intercosmic battle is raging between a manipulative being known as Scrier and his sworn nemesis, the Cthulu-like being known as the Other. Scrier, knowing he needs an army to defeat the Other, reaches into Thor’s mind and splits all the different aspects of his consciousness into fully functioning beings.

Multiple Thors are unleashed in a battle between the Scrier and the Other

It’s a glimpse of a convergence of parallel realities solely coming out of one mind. Suddenly, there are feminine Thors, there are demon and angel Thors - there are Thors from entirely different pantheons. While it's not the first time Thor has created his own team of Avengers, it's the first time the team has had a roster of one.

The Many Faces of Mythology

Thor Corps from Secret Wars

Thor is the archetype of the hero god, proposed to be even more powerful than Superman. He has had many names throughout Europe and Scandinavia, depending on the time being recorded and which tribe was recording. Some of these names being Donar and Thunar, all relating back to the Germanic word for thunder. The one guiding image throughout these disparate Thors is the principle of his battling monsters - all to protect Earth, or Midgard.

The gods classically adored are the fusing together of hundreds of folk tales.

Any cohesive religion is the synthesis of mythology, and the gods classically adored are the fusing together of hundreds of folk tales detailing their adventures. To say that Thor is many different Thors in one body is no small aside. A god is defined by belief in him. As there have been many beliefs in a supernatural hero just as we see in The Mighty Thor Annual #1, so those varied aspects of him are his very power, and only a god of such wide power like Thor can defeat an eldritch being of such cosmic horror.

Four Thors Prepare for Battle

The many aspects of Thor delve into the realm of the Other’s cosmic lunacy, where time and matter mean nothing. Still, Thor does not lose his resolve nor his calm. In the face of such unreality, neither Iron Man nor Captain America (let alone Hawkeye out in the dead of space) could be trusted to stop a being that has no form at all. Unless they were to take on the mantle of Thor (and some recognizable animals have become Thor too), then this is truly a job for a god.

Being split into all the different ideas and aspects of Thor proves, once and for all, just how powerful an Avenger he is, all by himself (and his many selves, that is). Leave the Avengers to be Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Thor will take care of anything outside that realm. After all, he’s not really from this realm at all.

Thor

Associated with the mythical realm of Asgard, Thor is a Marvel Comics hero who channels the power of thunder to slay their foes. Though the name is chiefly tied to Thor Odinson, several other characters also take on the role of God of Thunder, including Odinson's love interest, Jane Foster. Odin is portrayed as a physically imposing hero with incredible strength and typically wields the dwarven forged hammer, Mjolnir.
