Experts in the Illinois healthcare system recently gathered at the 2024 Illinois State of Reform Health Policy Conference to discuss the critical factors needed to achieve health equity in the state. Driving Towards Health Equity Rushil Desai, CEO of Aetna Better Health of Illinois, highlighted the significance of healthcare transformation collaboratives (HTCs) in targeting health equity. These collaboratives aim to unite providers, payers, community-based organizations (CBOs), and stakeholders to enhance health equity for Illinoians with historically poor health outcomes. Desai emphasized the importance of a seamless approach focused on members to ensure successful outcomes. Elevating Access for All Kimberly Hobson, CEO of South Side Healthy Community Organization (SSHCO), emphasized the necessity of collaboration to expand healthcare access for residents of Chicago's south side. SSHCO, comprising 13 healthcare organizations and three CBOs, advocates for equal opportunities for individuals to achieve optimal health. Harnessing Data for Impact Misty Drake, from Medical Home Network and Wellness West, stressed the crucial role of data in driving health outcomes. Understanding population demographics and disparities is key to incentivizing providers to deliver value-based care effectively. Data interoperability is essential for organizations to align metrics and prioritize areas for improvement. Addressing Health Disparities The Chinese American Service League (CASL) serves as a data hub for health disparity information in Asian-American populations. By disaggregating data for different ethnic groups, CASL and its partners can better address the diverse needs within their community. Empowering Communities for Better Health Collaboration and investment in community-led initiatives are foundational to overcoming health disparities. Stakeholders must engage patients actively, provide sustainable programs, and offer culturally-competent care to drive lasting change. Breaking Barriers to Equity Overcoming traditional healthcare-CBO infrastructure challenges will require increased partner engagement and patient education to drive behavioral change. Achieving health equity in Illinois demands a collective effort to prioritize collaboration and data innovation for a healthier future.
