10 Times Wrestling Storylines Continued Outside The Arena
In the wild world of professional wrestling, the action is usually contained in the ring, or at least in the arena if a match is contested under hardcore rules. But more often than not, a match - or an ongoing feud - can go beyond even the confines of the arena.
Oftentimes in pro wrestling, the action spills outside the ring. Sometimes that results in an awesome match, other times the fight flops!
There have been many occasions in WWE and TNA where rivalries have intensified to the point where nothing and no one is safe, not even in their own home. Angles have furthered where you least expect them to, and these are ten examples of storylines going beyond the wrestling arena.
Fate drew Steve Austin and Brian Pillman back together in the WWE when Pillman debuted in June 1996. Initially allied again given their history, the pair's relationship soured just as quickly when The Texas Rattlesnake broke Pillman's already-injured ankle during Austin's feud with Bret Hart.
The Hollywood Blondes are one of the greatest tag teams of all time. Here are some facts that fans probably forgot about this exciting WCW tag team.
On the November 4, 1996 episode of Raw, the Austin/Pillman feud escalated to the point where Stone Cold broke into Brian's home and Pillman retaliated by pulling out a handgun on live television. USA Network were not happy with the volatile angle, and WWE were forced to apologize for broadcasting the segment.
Randy Orton was determined to gain the ultimate revenge on former mentor/arch rival Triple H by destroying his entire family and taking the WWE Championship from him at WrestleMania 25. After months of Orton savagely assaulting Vince, Shane and even Stephanie McMahon, Triple H was driven over the edge.
On the March 9, 2009 episode of Raw, The Game broke into The Viper's own house, beat up Orton and then threw him through a window. Triple H was only stopped when the authorities arrived to arrest him.
As much as The Hardy Boyz are remembered for being a beloved tag team, there have been plenty of occasions when the brothers have become bitter rivals. Perhaps the strangest of which was in TNA, when Matt became "Broken" in 2016.
After suffering numerous defeats at Jeff's hands, "Broken" Matt Hardy challenged his brother to a no-disqualification contest at his own home. Blending backyard wrestling with delicious insanity, The Final Deletion was an artistic triumph which saw "Broken" Matt finally prevail over Brother Nero.
On paper, the concept of Kane and Daniel Bryan being a successful tag team shouldn't have worked. But thanks to creative genius and the talents of The Big Red Machine and The American Dragon, Team Hell No was a smash-hit with audiences.
Despite being a randomized tag-team unit, Kane and Daniel Bryan became one of WWE's best in 2012 and 2013 as Team Hell No.
After the pair were forced to attend joint-therapy in August 2012, a series of hilarious vignettes saw Kane and Bryan struggle to resolve their issues under the care of Dr. Shelby. Despite - or rather because of - their intense hatred for each other, Kane and Bryan would prove to be an efficient tag team.
The entire rivalry between John Cena and Edge produced a plethora of unforgettable moments in 2006 alone. After Edge had regained the WWE Championship at Cena's expense in the summer, Cena was determined to get more payback on his arch-rival.
John's chance came on the July 10, 2006 episode of Raw, when he broke into Edge's hotel room and proceeded to beat up the Rated-R Superstar all over the place. After clocking his foe with the WWE Title belt, The Cenation Leader promptly checked out.
It was a bizarre set of circumstances that led to AJ Styles challenging The Undertaker at WrestleMania 36. The line between reality and kayfabe became blurred, and then the entire world was impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020.
However, WWE adapted brilliantly in their production for the cinematic Boneyard Match. Set in an eerie cemetery/warehouse location, The Phenomenal One and The Deadman delivered a hugely creative and terrific main-event for Night 1 of WrestleMania 36.
After betraying his whole famliy, Dominik Mysterio proceeded to ruthlessly torment his father until he agreed to fight him one-on-one. Over the next several months, Dominik and Rhea Ripley would crash family gatherings, specifically targeting Rey.
The intense segments saw Rhea and Dom attack Rey's injured ankle at the Mysterio Household on Thanksgiving, Dominik being arrested on Christmas Eve, and then the villainous pair crash the Valentine's Day dinner Rey had organized for his wife. All of which beautifully built up the inevitable father-son clash for WrestleMania 39.
The rivalry between The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin reached new extremes on the April 12, 1999 episode of Raw. With The Brahma Bull now in possession of Austin's prized Smoking Skull belt, The Rock taunted the WWE Champion to reclaim his property.
Stone Cold Steve Austin & The Rock had tremendous chemistry together, leaving behind many great moments in the process, some of which were forgotten.
The Rock had never forgotten or forgiven Austin throwing away his Intercontinental Title off a bridge into a river, and The Great One finally got his revenge. First by shockingly throwing Austin off the bridge, then throwing the belt into the river to join The Rattlesnake.
As mentioned previously, Stone Cold had taken The Rock's Intercontinental Championship belt and thrown it off a bridge into the Piscataqua River. And it all came about on the December 8, 1997 edition of Raw, when Vince McMahon ordered Steve Austin to defend the IC Title against The Rock again.
Austin willingly surrendered the championship to The Rock, delivered a Stunner to him and then threw away the IC Belt the following week for a livid Rock to witness. As much as Austin valued the Intercontinental Championship, he valued the WWE Championship more (which was his ultimate goal).
From the moment Steve Austin rejected Vince McMahon's authority, so too did the WWE owner refuse to have The Rattlesnake represent the company as its champion. Their feud could only intensify after Vince finally succeeded in taking the WWE Championship off Austin.
After the events of Breakdown, Vince was hospitalized following an attack by The Undertaker and Kane. Leaving McMahon vulnerable to perhaps Austin's greatest assault ever on the October 5, 1998 episode of Raw. Disguised as a doctor, Austin proceeded to administer physical therapy like no one else could.
