A day out at the zoo is a classic family activity. But often you have to embark on somewhat of a road trip in order to reach one. However if you don't fancy all the travelling, then there is a zoo which is only 12 minutes from Cambridge on the train.

The village of Shepreth, half way between Cambridge and Royston is filled with gorgeous thatched cottages. It even has pubs which are perfect for enjoying an afternoon drink in the beer garden.

Just a two minute walk from the railways station Shepreth Wildlife Park which is home to a range of animals from tigers to lemurs. With daily keeper talks, a kids play area and a train to take you around the park, it makes a great family day out. Tickets are £14.50 for an adult and £12.50 for a child, however there are a rage of discounts available including entry for £10if you travel to the park by train.

Shepreth station is on the Northern Line that runs between Cambridge and London. The direct train takes around 12 minutes, with a super off-peak adult return ticket costing just £3.90.

Aside from the zoo, the village and has several pubs. In fact, its pubs are so close to the railway station that the village is included in the Rail and Ale Trails for Cambridgeshire. There are several other of these trails in the county like this one in Whittlesford.

On this trail, you can enjoy three different pubs that are all less than a 30 minute walk away. Two are in Shepreth and one is in the neighbouring village of Barrington.

You can spend an afternoon walking to each one or you can simply choose one to visit and spend the day there. Some of them even have beer gardens outside and lots of delicious pub grub to order.

The Plough

Closest to the train station, The Plough is only a six minute walk down High Street. A local favourite, this pub has a great beer garden where they often have live music, especially during summer.

The Royal Oak

A 26 minute walk from the train station in nearby Barrington, The Royal Oak is a stunning historic pub with plenty of beams. Located in an impressive Tudor building, it's definitely one of the prettiest pubs in the area.

The Rail and Ale Trail: "This 16th century pub and restaurant is located in the beautiful, quirky village of Barrington, home to one of the largest village greens in the country. The bar boasts four local real ales, a focused wine list and cocktails."

The Green Man

A 25 minute walk from the station, The Green Man is a good family-friendly pub on the outskirts of Shepreth. You can't miss it as the building is painted a bright green. There is a lovely seating area outside to enjoy the sun and they serve traditional pub grub.
