Officials Stress Safety at Lake Ashtabula
VALLEY CITY, N.D. - As summer brings many to the waters of Lake Ashtabula, authorities are emphasizing the need for caution. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the North Dakota Game and Fish Department have installed life jacket loaner stations at various recreational spots around the lake. Baldhill Dam Resource Manager Scott Tichy highlighted the significance of wearing a life jacket, regardless of age.
Importance of Life Jackets

Tichy emphasized, "I really want to encourage the adults to wear life jackets. I’ve witnessed unfortunate drownings during my 30 years at Ashtabula, and in every case, it was an adult victim. It's crucial for all of us to be vigilant around water, ensuring we not only carry life jackets but wear them."
Exercise Caution on the River

With the Sheyenne River currently flowing at about 900 cubic feet per second, Tichy advised boaters and kayakers to be cautious. He noted, "This year, we've seen higher river flows compared to recent years. I urge everyone to be careful out there. Although the current flow is around 900cfs, it's essential to exercise caution."
Watch Over Young Swimmers

Tichy also reminded parents to closely supervise children swimming in designated areas and stressed the importance of using life jackets or floatation devices for everyone.
