Calumet’s New Single ‘Something Strange’

spinexmusic.com 2 days ago

Calumet, the funk and soul band hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, has been creating unique music since their formation in 2001. Their latest single, “,” is now available and showcases musical influences from Tower of Power, P-Funk, and Jane’s Addiction. The track features the exceptional saxophone talents of Jerry Donato, who brings a classic vibe with his soloing and section parts.

The band lineup for “Something Strange” includes Eric Mobley on vocals and keyboards, Jason Mitchell on bass, guitar, and vocals, Julian Mitchell on drums, Michelle Worley on vocals, and Jerry Donato on saxophone.

Jason Mitchell explains, “’Something Strange’ is about the pitfalls and quirks of modern dating. On the one hand, you don’t really know who you’re interacting with online because people can hide behind a fake bio or photos. On the other, it’s easy for people to be dismissive and superficial when swiping through pics on a dating app.”

The accompanying video for “Something Strange” is attention-grabbing and thought-provoking. Jason adds, “Everyone has horror stories from dating and dealing with extreme personalities. We’re depicting many of these ‘worst case scenarios’ visually, where the person’s exterior matches the horror within. There are a bunch of hidden references, even down to the direction of the swipes, since many people choose the wrong partner, knowing it’s a bad move.”

Calumet continues to innovate and has a half dozen new tracks in the works. They are also running a Patreon campaign and digitizing video footage from their early days, which will be available on their YouTube and Patreon pages.

Always pushing the envelope, Calumet has some unreleased songs from the past and a crazy-cool remake of “Skin Tight” by the Ohio Players. Stay tuned for more from this dynamic band as they continue to showcase their talent and creativity.
