FEMD rescued two trapped persons at a building collapse in Prince and Princess Estate Gudu, Abuja

Two people have been saved from the rubble of a collapsed building along Close 10, Drive 5, in Prince and Princess Estate, Gudu District, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Federal Emergency Management Department (FEMD), in a statement by Nkechi Isa, said the department received a distress call at about 6:45 PM on Friday and promptly activated the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the FCT Fire Service, and the Department of Development Control.

According to the statement, the collapsed structure was a duplex under construction.

The Acting Director General of FEMD, Mrs Florence Dawon Wenegieme, said all construction workers had evacuated the building upon noticing signs of imminent collapse.

However, two persons in a detached bungalow behind the duplex were trapped under the rubble before the FEMD search and rescue team rescued them.

Wenegieme urged developers to always adhere to building codes and perform integrity tests on existing structures before carrying out renovations.

She also called on developers to provide insurance coverage for both the building and workers on site.
