House Of The Dragon Starts Fixing One Major Dragon Problem Ahead Of Huge Season 3 Battle & Death
WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 2, epsiode 3 and George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood book, on which the show is based!
Rhaenyra finally confirms that a dragon from Fire & Blood exists in House of the Dragon, setting up a tragic aspect of a major upcoming battle for Team Black. After largely ignoring several members of the younger generation of House Targaryen’s family tree in House of the Dragon season 1, such as Aegon, Viserys, Joffrey, and Daeron, season 2 is planting the seeds of how important they’ll be in the show’s future. In addition to finally confirming the whereabouts of Alicent’s fourth child Daeron Targaryen and his dragon Tessarion, House of the Dragon season 2 reveals that Rhaenyra’s children have another dragon in their arsenal.
In addition to revealing that Rhaenyra has Daenerys’ dragon eggs from Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon season 2, episode 3 confirms that Aegon’s dragon Stormcloud has already hatched in the show’s timeline. As Rhaenyra tells Rhaena about the dragons she’s sending with her, she mentions Joffrey’s young dragon Tyraxes and Aegon the Younger's hatchling Stormcloud, who is small but "will grow." It’s quite a relief that House of the Dragon has finally acknowledged Aegon’s dragon Stormcloud, as they play important roles in a massive, devastating battle relatively soon.
After confirming Aegon has Stormcloud and the dragon will grow, it seems that House of the Dragon may actually adapt their Battle of the Gullet flight. But, it still needs to be convincing that Stormcloud is big enough to carry Aegon on a long flight. In Fire & Blood, Rhaenyra’s two youngest children are sent to Pentos for their safety, similar to her plans in House of the Dragon season 2, though now they’re also joining Joffrey and Rhaena at the Eyrie. The book reveals that when Aegon, Viserys, and Stormcloud sail to Essos, they’re caught in a trap that causes the Battle of the Gullet.

Shortly before the Battle of the Gullet starts, Aegon and Viserys’ ship is attacked, leading the young Aegon to ride his dragon Stormcloud for the very first time in order to flee to Dragonstone. However, he has to leave Viserys behind, causing the fate of Rhaenyra’s youngest child to be uncertain throughout the Dance. When Aegon arrives at Dragonstone, Stormcloud tragically dies from his wounds, with Aegon’s news of the attack leading Prince Jacaerys and Vermax to fly into battle. As more tragedy strikes Team Black, both Vermax and Prince Jacaerys die in the Battle of the Gullet.
The Battle of the Gullet is expected to happen in House of the Dragon season 3, as Prince Jacaerys seemingly survives season 2.
While Rhaenyra noting that Stormcloud will grow gives more hope for Aegon’s Battle of the Gullet moment happening in season 3, another factor may complicate its adaptation. In Fire & Blood, Aegon the Younger is already approximately 10 years old when he rides Stormcloud, making both the Targaryen and dragon significantly older than their TV show counterparts. In House of the Dragon, Aegon appears to be no older than five years old, given Joffrey is only six. Unless House of the Dragon magically ages up Rhaenyra's youngest children, Aegon may be too young to fly Stormcloud in season 3.
As war erupts in Westeros, dragons will be sent to battle. Here's a description of every dragon in HBO's House of the Dragon, heading into season 2.
New episodes of House of the Dragon season 2 release Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and Max.
