Senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe, who has been representing Abia South senatorial district since 2007, revealed details of his meeting with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu on Monday, July 1, 2024.

Speaking to the media, Abaribe stated that Nnamdi Kanu is ready to abide by all conditions given by the federal government to enable his early release.

According to the Senator, all Senators, governors, business leaders, clergy and traditional rulers are willing to support his release from detention.

This move, he said, will put a stop to the insecurities in the South East which have been perpetuated by criminal elements disguising as agitators.

“On behalf of the caucus, I met with Nnamdi Kanu on Monday, between 2pm and 3pm. And he is very supportive of our plea to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Any Senator in the South East, the governors, business leaders, clergy, and traditional rulers are all willing. So, I do not think anything will stop us.

He has also assured me that he is ready to fulfil any condition that will lead to his early release,” he said.

The Senator further said, that the IPOB leader is pained at the way residents of the South East are suffering as a result of his continuous detention.

“This matter cannot be resolved legally. If we continue with the legal wrangling, we will continue to cause insecurities because the legitimate demand has been hijacked by criminals, undesirables and all manner of elements who have used it to perpetuate their own nefarious deals on the rest of the people of the South East. Nobody in the South East likes what is going on.

People cannot go out of their houses on Monday, people are maimed and killed. Some people are going around killing even security men in the name of looking for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

Nnamdi Kanu himself also confirmed to me last Monday, that he never made any request of that nature, that anybody should go and kill people.

In fact, he was very pained that the South East is suffering because of this. He assured me that any day he is out, is also the day they will now know those who are legitimate agitators and those who are criminals.”
