Bauchi and Nasarawa states have recorded 79 suspected cases of cholera with one death in each of the states.

In Bauchi, 50 suspected cholera cases were recorded in three local government areas of Bauchi, Giade and Toro, with one confirmed death.

Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, the executive chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Board, disclosed this during a press briefing on Monday in Bauchi.

He, however, said that as at July 1, there were no confirmed cases of cholera in Bauchi State despite the 50 suspected cases.

Mohammed said, “The suspected cases include 30 reported in Giade initially, with an additional four cases recently identified in Bauchi Local Government Area. Unfortunately, one death has been recorded among these suspected cases.”

He assured that health workers were actively managing the suspected cases and had sent samples to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for testing.

The results, he said, would confirm whether cholera is indeed present in the affected areas.

Similarly, 29 suspected cases of cholera have been reported in the Kokona and Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State, with one person dying from diarrhoea and vomiting while being treated in a healthcare facility in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Gaza Gwamna, disclosed this on Monday during a three-day workshop on Reproductive, Maternal, and Child Health hosted by Rotary International in Akwanga LGA.

Dr Gwamna reported that in recent weeks, Kokona Local Government Area recorded 19 suspected cases of cholera, while Nasarawa Eggon Local Government had 10 cases. He expressed concern over the death of a patient in Nasarawa Eggon who succumbed to diarrhoea and vomiting, although it was not confirmed if the death was due to cholera.

“We have 19 suspected cases of cholera in Kokona and 10 in Nasarawa Eggon. The one that died in Nasarawa Eggon had diarrhoea and was vomiting, but there was no confirmation that he died of cholera,” Dr Gwamna stated.
