President Bola Tinubu has stated that an arm of government alone cannot build a strong and united governance system, unless there is collaboration among all the segments.   

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Legislative Open Week of the 10th House of Representatives on Wednesday, Tinubu said his government was prepared to collaborate with the legislative and judicial arms of government to ensure an all inclusive government, to create a framework that promote mutual respect. 

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, he urged the lawmakers to engage in robust oversight of the activities of government as a way of carrying out its check and balance function, to ensure accountability in governance.

While reminding the lawmakers of the need to organise town hall meetings with their constituents in order to gather their views and feelings about governance, as according to him, not every citizen has the opportunity to come to Abuja, he urged members to focus on representative democracy, through platforms of engagements with Nigerians.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, has described the Open Week as an opportunity created to allow Nigerians scrutinise and dialogue with the parliament.

“An open parliament is the cornerstone of a thriving democracy. By ensuring transparency, openness, and accessibility, we can build trust between the legislature and the citizens we serve. 

“This House Open Week provides a unique opportunity to engage directly with the public, fostering a culture of accountability and mutual respect. By opening our doors, we invite scrutiny and dialogue, which are essential for improving governance and strengthening democratic institutions”, he said.
