When can we watch the 2024 ‘Garfield’ movie on Netflix after ‘The Garfield Movie’ hits digital platforms?

Garfield’s disdain for Mondays is well-known, but this particular Monday brings with it some exciting news that is bound to brighten up the mood of that lazy cat: The Garfield Movie will be accessible for purchase and rental on digital platforms starting tomorrow.

Adapted from the Garfield comic strip by Jim Davis, the animated film from 2024 marks the third installment in the Garfield movie series to hit the big screens. (The initial two movies, Garfield: The Movie and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, were classified as “live-action” and featured Bill Murray lending his voice to the titular orange feline.) In this new Garfield feature, Chris Pratt gives voice to the quick-witted cat, with Nicholas Hoult portraying Jon Arbuckle, Garfield’s human companion. The talented voice cast also includes Harvey Guillén as Odie, Samuel L. Jackson as Garfield’s father, and Hannah Waddingham as Jinx, a Persian cat. Additionally, the ensemble of voice actors includes Ving Rhames, Cecily Strong, Brett Goldstein, Bowen Yang, and Snoop Dogg.

The Garfield Movie made its debut in cinemas in May and achieved notable success at the box office, raking in a total of over $244.8 million worldwide. Perhaps this is why Sony made the decision to extend the movie’s theatrical run to two months, deviating from the current trend among major studios of just a one-month stint in theaters.

But before you buy or rent The Garfield Movie on digital, you should know that—because it is a Sony movie—The Garfield Movie will likely be on Netflix very soon. Here’s what to know about The Garfield Movie digital release, including where to watch The Garfield Movie on streaming, and when The Garfield Movie will be on Netflix.

How to watch The Garfield Movie on streaming:

Beginning on Tuesday, July 9, The Garfield Movie will be available to buy and rent digitally on Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie will cost $19.99 to rent, and $24.99 to buy. If you rent the movie, you will have a 48-hour window to watch it after you hit “play.”

If you buy a digital copy of The Garfield Movie, you’ll also get some with bonus features with your purchase, including a gag reel; a deleted scene titled “‘I’m Back’ Animatic, featuring Hannah Waddingham;” and Easter Eggs:  Garnishes à la Garfield. Other bonus features include the following extras: Indoor Cat, Outdoor Adventure; Cast of Critters; How to Draw’s; Concept Arts; and Animation Progression Reel.

The Garfield Movie DVD release date has not yet been announced.

When will The Garfield Movie be streaming on Netflix?

The Garfield Movie will likely be on Netflix sometime this fall. Netflix has a deal with Sony Pictures that gives the streamer the rights to the Sony movies in the “Pay 1” window, meaning the first streaming window after the film’s home media release. Other recent Sony movies, including The Pope’s Exorcist and No Hard Feelings came to Netflix about four months after opening in theaters. Madame Web, however, came to Netflix just three months after it opened in theaters. Sony’s most recent movie, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, is coming to Netflix on July 22—about four months after the movie opened in theaters.

If The Garfield Movie follows this same release pattern, you can expect The Garfield Movie to stream on Netflix around September 2024 (three months after the movie opened in theaters) or October 2024 (four months after the movie opened in theaters).

In the meantime, you can watch the new Garfield movie online by buying or renting the movie on digital platforms. Make it a lasagna-and-movie night.
