Bauchi State Police Command has arrested Adamu Alhassan, a 30-year-old in connection with an attack on Safiya Yunusa, a 60-year-old woman inflicting severe injuries on her head leading to her death.

Command PPRO, SP Ahmed Wakili in a statement made available to Journalists on Monday stated, “One Aliyu Yunusa, a 40-year-old resident of Yelwa Village, reported that unknown individuals broke into his mother’s residence and attacked her with a dangerous weapon.”

The report was received from the Officer-in-Charge (O/C) of Nabardo Police Outstation regarding a grievous incident that occurred on 07/07/2024 at about 0100hrs.

The PPRO added, “Upon receiving the report, a Police team led by the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) was dispatched to the scene and the victim was immediately conveyed to Toro General Hospital for medical attention.”

He added, “Tragically, the medical Doctor at the hospital confirmed her dead and following a postmortem examination, her body was released to her relatives for burial.”

Following collaborative efforts with local vigilante groups and Fulani leaders in the area, one suspect, Adamu Alhassan, a 30-year-old was arrested in connection with the attack.

He explained that the suspect’s footprints were identified and traced from the scene just as the weapon used in committing the crime was also recovered as exhibits.

The suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet investigation and prosecution upon completion of the investigation, as ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Mohammed.

A few days after the arrest of a 50-year-old man by the Police Command for maltreating his 5-year-old son, another similar case has emerged. A 30-year-old man has also been arrested for the same offense.

The arrest was part of the relentless efforts of the Command to maintain the security disposition of the State leading to the arrest of two suspects in connection to different crimes against humanity.

According to the Command PPRO, SP Ahmed Wakili, “On 07 July 2024, a report of child abuse was received by the Command. The report indicated that on 06 July 2024, at about 1720hrs, one Mamuda Abubakar, a 30-year-old resident of Abbo, Chinkani Ward, Giade LGA, Bauchi State, tied his biological son, Adamu Mamuda alias Jumba, aged 6 years old, with a chain inside a room at their residence.”

The PPRO added, “Upon receiving the information, a team of Detectives were immediately dispatched to the scene of the reported incident. The child was successfully rescued, and the suspect, Mamuda Abubakar, was effectively arrested and is currently under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), state headquarters in Bauchi.”

According to the suspect, he confined the minor to prevent him from going to his maternal grandfather’s house.

The suspect and the minor’s mother separated five years ago, and the mother has since remarried and no longer lives with her father.

He explained that his son should not visit the grandfather’s house due to the lack of morality among the children there and when the son insisted on going, the suspect became furious and ultimately chained the minor.

Ahmed Wakili stated that, “The Bauchi State Police Command remains committed to the protection of all citizens, especially vulnerable children. We urge the public to report any incidents of abuse or maltreatment to the nearest Police station.”

The CP also urged the public to support the police with useful information that will help in identifying the remaining culprits.
