The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Bingham University are joining forces to strengthen early warning systems in the country. This collaboration, discussed during a recent courtesy visit by the University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Haruna Kuje Ayuba, to NiMet’s Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, promises to improve weather monitoring and preparedness.

Professor Anosike expressed his appreciation for Professor Ayuba’s recognition of NiMet’s role in national development. “Our work is the basic tool for the protection of lives and property,” he emphasized. He also encouraged Bingham University to engage with the community to leverage the partnership’s potential for positive impact.

NiMet further underscored its commitment to the collaboration with Professor Anosike’s assurance of a formal partnership agreement. “We are ready to partner with the university,” he declared. “We will outline the partnership terms in a memorandum of understanding (MoU).” He additionally stressed the significance of maintaining weather stations and ensuring efficient data generation and transmission.

Professor Ayuba, in response, highlighted the purpose of the visit: “We came to congratulate Professor Anosike on his appointment as NiMet’s Director-General and Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization.” He further expressed the university’s desire for a comprehensive partnership encompassing weather station establishment, student training, staff exchanges, and internship opportunities.

Professor Ayuba concluded by acknowledging Professor Anosike’s long-standing contributions to the nation’s sustainable development, even before assuming his current position at NiMet.

This collaboration between NiMet and Bingham University signifies a significant step towards further strengthen early warning systems in Nigeria. By combining NiMet’s expertise with Bingham University’s academic resources, the partnership has the potential to safeguard lives and property from weather-related hazards.
