The courtroom fell silent as Ricky James LaFargue faced his fate for the murder of Thuan Nguyen. In a case that struck the community for its senseless violence, LaFargue, who executed a father with a bullet to the back of the head over a parking space dispute at an Atlanta mall, was sentenced to life in prison without parole by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Alice Benton. This judgment went beyond what prosecutors had initially requested.

Benton’s Sentencing Sets A Harsh Standard

Benton declared the punishment, adding five additional years to the life sentence of LaFargue, 24. Nguyen, 31, was shot on March 8, 2020, in the parking lot of Lenox Square Mall.

The sentencing was heavier than expected. Prosecutors had cited LaFargue’s age at the time (19) and his lack of an adult criminal record when suggesting a lighter sentence of life with the possibility of parole.

A Judge’s Grim Comments

Judge Benton’s comments underscored the severity of the act: This case is particularly disturbing. It was described by witnesses to the murder as an execution. She referenced how this act destroyed a family, leaving Nguyen’s child without a father. The brutality of placing a gun to the back of Nguyen’s head and pulling the trigger influenced her decision.

A Mall Dispute Turns Fatal

The tragic event unfolded outside Lenox Square where two groups argued over a parking spot. The dispute resurfaced after both parties left and returned to the mall’s parking lot later that evening.

Quick Arrest Amidst Chaos

Nguyen was fatally wounded during this second confrontation. Gino Vowin, an eyewitness dining nearby, described witnessing a man with a gun before shots were fired, leading to chaotic scenes as police arrived.

Legal Proceedings and Defense Claims

Authorities quickly identified LaFargue through surveillance footage. He was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Brooklyn on November 2, 2020. Extradited back to Atlanta in February 2021, he has since remained in custody.

During trial proceedings, LaFargue’s defense attorney contended that the gun accidentally went off while he was attempting to strike Nguyen. Despite these claims, the jury convicted him.
