It's all hands on deck as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) seeks to appoint a new manager for the Super Eagles.

For the second time in the first half of 2024, the NFF is on the lookout for a new manager following the resignation of Finidi George.

The 53-year-old stepped down after underwhelming results in the FIFA World Cup qualification fixtures against South Africa and the Benin Republic.

These disappointing outcomes put the Super Eagles at risk of missing the 2026 World Cup. In an effort to salvage the qualification campaign, the NFF announced in a communiqué that they are seeking to appoint a foreign tactician for the Super Eagles.

While the decision to bring in a foreign manager is widely supported by stakeholders across the country's football scene, a recent report suggests the federation might replicate its previous approach used in appointing former coach, Jose Peseiro.

NFF to replicate approach used in hiring Peseiro?

According to a report from Score Nigeria, the NFF hierarchy is considering bypassing the technical committee's recommendation for a new Super Eagles coach and appointing a manager themselves.

The report highlights that this bold approach was previously employed during Amaju Pinnick's tenure as president of the NFF, particularly when he appointed Gernot Rohr, as well as Peseiro as coach of the national team.

This strategy has yielded positive results in the past, with Nigeria securing bronze at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under Rohr’s leadership and later winning a silver medal under Peseiro's reign.

The outcome of the coaching appointment remains to be seen, but it is undoubtedly a topic worth closely monitoring.
