Two teens arrested after attempting to flee from alleged car thefts in Southington

Two juveniles are facing burglary charges after allegedly breaking into multiple motor vehicles in Southington on Friday.

Patrol officers were dispatched to the area of Laning Street around 5:21 a.m. on Friday on a report of active motor vehicle burglaries, according to Southington Police Department.

As officers canvassed the area of the Days Inn at 30 Laning Street and Kenmore Apartments at 78 Laning Street, an officer reported hearing voices coming from 48 Laning Street where he allegedly observed two males committing motor vehicle burglaries, police said.

As the officer announced himself, both males allegedly attempted to flee on foot, running westbound toward Interstate 84, according to police. Officers gave chase and were able to quickly apprehend one of the males. A perimeter was set up, and officers were able to locate the second male, who was reportedly hiding in a wooded area, police said.

Police allege that four motor vehicles in the area had either been entered or attempted to have been entered by the two males. One of these vehicles had a side window smashed out, according to police

As a result of the initial investigation, both males, juveniles aged 16 and 17, were placed under arrest, police said.

Juvenile No. 1 was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal attempt to commit burglary, two counts of third-degree burglary and interfering with an officer.

Juvenile No. 2 was allegedly found in possession of a screwdriver that police believed may have been used to attempt to gain entry into vehicles, according to police. He was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal attempt to commit burglary, two counts of third-degree burglary, interfering with an officer and possession of burglar tools.

Both juveniles were released to their respective guardians, police said.

According to police, juvenile No. 1 was issued a juvenile summons and is set to appear at juvenile court in Waterbury on July 11. Juvenile No. 2 was issued a juvenile summons and is set to appear at juvenile court in New Haven on July 11.
