Sports Rounds-Up: Arsenal Overcome Late Derby Scare, Haaland Strikes Back from Injury, Leverkusen Remain Unbeaten

First-half goals from Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and an earlier own goal from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg were enough to help Arsenal to a 3-2 away victory over bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspurs.

Sunday’s visit to Tottenham had been earmarked as Arsenal’s toughest fixture in the run-in and the gunners needed to grind through a nervy last ten minutes to secure the much-needed win.

In the second half, Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya, mistakenly handed the ball to Cristian Romero. Romero took advantage of this error and calmly scored a goal, reducing Arsenal’s lead to two goals.

With just 10 minutes left in regular time, Arsenal’s Declan Rice conceded a penalty by fouling Ben Davies in the penalty box. Hue-Ming-Son expertly converted the penalty, scoring his 7th goal in the North London derby. This makes him the second-highest goalscorer for Tottenham in the fixture, trailing behind Harry Kane’s 15 goals.

Despite Tottenham’s late surge, Arsenal managed to hold on for a narrow win to briefly extend their lead in the premier league standings to 4 points, ahead of Manchester City’s visit to Nottingham Forest.

Haaland Punishes Nottingham Forest in Return from Injury

Erling Haaland, who sat the last two games due to an injury, scored nine minutes into his introduction in the second half to wrap up a 2-0 win for the Cityzens.

Erling Haaland’s vital second-half goal marked his 21st of the premier league campaign, strengthening his bid for consecutive Golden Boot awards, with only four games remaining.

His goal also helped City fight a potential comeback from a Nottingham Forest side that had multiple opportunities to draw level in the first half, particularly a glaring miss by Chris Wood in the 6-yard box.

Manchester City currently sit 1 point behind leaders Arsenal in second place but has a game in hand against Tottenham Hotspurs in their penultimate game of the season.

Salah and Klopp Face-off in Title-ending draw at West Ham

Liverpool’s talisman Mohammed Salah was visibly upset about not being included in the starting lineup for the visit to London side West Ham United on Saturday.

With the game tied at 2-2, Liverpool’s manager decided to bring on the trio of Mohammed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Joe Gomez. But briefly, before the substitution took place, Salah was seen arguing with his manager on camera.

While the details of the conversation remain unclear, Mohammed Salah reportedly told reporters when asked to comment on the incident after the match: “If I speak today, there will be fire.”

Liverpool’s draw with West Ham on Saturday, following a 2-0 derby defeat to Everton earlier in the week, effectively put an end to their hopes of winning the Premier League, denying departing manager Jurgen Klopp a fairytale farewell.

Leverkusen Still to Lose a Match This Season

Leverkusen managed to come from behind twice in the Bundesliga match against VfB Stuggart on Saturday to draw 2-2 and extend their unbeaten streak in the 2023/2024 season to 46 games.

Despite having already clinched the Bundesliga title, Leverkusen is aiming to make history by becoming the first German team to complete an entire domestic season without defeat. This feat would put them in the company of English club Arsenal and Serie A side Juventus, both of whom have achieved this feat in their respective leagues.

Leverkusen’s unbeaten legacy was under threat when they found themselves trailing 2-0 after goals from Fuhrich and Undav. Stuggart were well on their way to handing Leverkusen their first defeat of the season until a later header from Andrich, in the final action of the game, saw Leverkusen equalize and end the game 2-2.
