Gov. Yusuf, prioritise public needs over emirate tussle

Blueprint 2024/10/6

In recent months, Kano state has been embroiled in disputes, protests, court cases over the emirship, drawing considerable attention and resources away from the most pressing issues. While I believe, the historical and cultural significance of Kano’s revered kingdom is undeniable, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf must prioritise the well-being of Kano people over these endless crises. Acts of violence and lawlessness have recently become rampant in some parts of Kano, thereby creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among residents.

The primary responsibility of any government is to improve the lives of its citizens. This involves focusing on critical areas such as security, healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Unfortunately, the ongoing struggles over the emirship has diverted attention from these fundamental areas, leaving some essential projects and services in limbo.

Some of our hospitals are still underfunded, medical supplies are scarce, and there is a significant shortage of healthcare professionals in various government hospitals. As we have seen him visiting hospitals before the Supreme Court verdict, the governor of Kano state has to dissipate more energy to improving the healthcare service delivery, ensuring that every Kano citizen has access to quality medical care.

Again, despite the recent declaration of emergency on education, our primary and secondary schools are still struggling with some students sitting on bare floors. Not to talk of overcrowded classrooms, outdated equipments and materials, and insufficient availability of teachers in most classrooms. Moreover, our students of primary and secondary schools are not receiving the desired quality education they deserve. It is imperative that the governor channels energy and resources into building a robust educational system that can compete on a national and global scale.

While the emirship is an important cultural institution, it should not overshadow the most pressing needs of Kano citizens. The governor of Kano state must now refocus efforts on initiatives that directly impact the daily lives of the people. Enough of this emirship crises.
