Anambra State Assembly Committee Summons  Market  Caretaker Committee Chairman Over Financial Misappropriation

Anambra State House of Assembly, Special Committee on Revenue Mobilization has summoned the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ogbogu Main Market Onitsha, Mr. Chukwuleta Ndubuisi to appear before the committee on Monday, 8th July 2024 to clarify alleged financial improprieties at the market and related matters.

The Committee Chairman and Member representing Ogbaru Constituency One, Honourable Noble Igwe issued the summons while addressing other members of the market’s caretaker committee who were present at the State House of Assembly.

The committee instructed the Ogbogu Market Chairman to appear with a list of shops in the market, the market payment ledger, evidence of remittances to the state government, a statement of account, and all relevant documents to support his submission and assist the Committee.

Honourable Igwe revealed that the committee had initially invited Mr. Ndubuisi to appear on first July 2024, in which he acknowledged the invitation, but failed to attend without providing any reason for his absence and instead attempted to circumvent the process.

Honourable Igwe explained that the committee was established in accordance with sections one hundred and three, one hundred and twenty-eight, and one hundred and twenty-nine of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended and has the mandate to explore all avenues to increase the state’s revenue base.

The lawmaker recalled that on Monday, 17th June 2024, all market leaders met with the Special Adviser to the Governor on Commerce and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry to discuss increasing the state’s revenue and closing any loopholes, which laid the foundation for the current proceedings.

He assured that the committee would perform its duties diligently, transparently, and with utmost fairness and integrity.

The members representing Anaocha Constituency Two, Sir Ejike Okechukwu, and Aguata Constituency Two, Chief Tony Muobike, who are parts of the committee expressed concern over the disregard for the committee’s summons and stated that such actions would be addressed according to the constitution.
