Morgan Freeman leans on a wall in Kiss the Girls

The Morgan Freeman movie Kiss the Girls is finding new life on Netflix. This comes as Aldis Hodge will take over Freeman's role as Alex Cross in the film for a new take on the character.

Per ScreenRant, the 1997 movie Kiss the Girls is ranking at No. 3 on Netflix's Global Top 10 list, garnering 7.1 million views and 13.7 million viewing hours. The 27-year-old film is notably not streaming on Netflix in the United States, but has garnered high viewership with its availability in international territories. Fortunately, those in the U.S. can still otherwise revisit the film for free, as it's currently streaming on Pluto TV. It's also available in the U.S. for Paramount+ subscribers for those who want to stream the movie free of ads.

Kiss the Girls is the first live-action adaptation of James Patterson's Alex Cross novel series. Morgan Freeman plays Alex Cross, a skilled detective investigating a psychotic killer following the disappearance of his niece. Directed by Gary Fleder and written by David Klass, the movie also starred Ashley Judd, Cary Elwes, Tony Goldwyn, Brian Cox, Mena Suvari, Jeremy Piven, and Jay O. Sanders.

The movie was not a critical darling, but it was a modest box office success. With a budget of less than $30 million, Kiss the Girls earned more than $60 million in theaters. It was enough of a return to move forward with a sequel, resulting in Freeman reprising the role for 2001's Along Came a Spider. The follow-up film was a bigger hit financially, earning over $105 million with a similar budget. However, a trilogy wasn't meant to be, as Freeman never reprised the role.

A divisive video game adaptation returns 8 years after its theatrical run on a new streaming home.

In 2012, the franchise was given a reboot with Tyler Perry taking over Freeman's role for the unconnected feature film adaptation Alex Cross. Directed by Rob Cohen, the film was planned to be the start of a new movie series, but it underperformed big time at the box office. It was budgeted at $35 million and made just under that at the box office, pulling in $34.6 million. A Rotten Tomatoes score of 11% sealed the deal on the planned future of the reboot.
